The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law chapter of the American Inn of Court held its annual banquet on May 9. Pupils (15 third- and fourth-year law students) gathered with Masters of the Bench and Barristers (judges and practicing attorneys) at the School's Riverfront Campus to celebrate another successful year for the chapter. Dean Phyllis L. Crocker welcomed guests and Master of the Bench Frank D. Eaman delivered keynote remarks.
Detroit Mercy Law's Inn of Court program kicked off in September with an opening reception at the London Chop House. Thereafter, members convened monthly at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit to explore the legal and ethical issues arising in the course of a legal malpractice action.
The May 9 banquet was the closing event of Detroit Mercy Law's Inn of Court program for this academic year. Following a cocktail hour and dinner, members cast their votes for the team who most successfully presented their issue. Pupils Kristine Horn, Kourtney Pratt, and Sydnee Rogers (all '17) were voted the winning team. Their practicing teammates were Danielle Hagaman-Clark ('01), John Hubbard, Vassal Johnson, II, Ven Johnson ('86), Laura Kubit, and Oakland County Circuit Court Shalina Kumar ('96).
The American Inn of Court Program was founded in 1984 through the efforts and leadership of now-Senior U.S. District Judge Julian A. Cook, Jr. Its primary goal is to instill in its Pupils a commitment to professionalism in a litigation setting.
