Michigan schools will be able to make school buses more visible when stopped to pick up or drop off students, under legislation signed last Thursday by Gov. Rick Snyder.
“Protecting Michigan students and drivers is critically important,” Snyder said. “These bills help ensure that drivers will be better able to see stopped school buses, potentially preventing accidents that put both drivers and students boarding the bus at risk.”
House Bill 4054, sponsored by state Rep. Holly Hughes, amends the Pupil Transportation Act to allow school buses to be equipped with additional flashing advisory signs. It is now Public Act 233 of 2017.
Snyder also signed five additional bills:
• House Bill 4907, sponsored by state Rep. Roger Victory, allows commercial vehicle owners to purchase fundraising licensing plates from the Secretary of State for certain vehicles within their fleet. It is now PA 234 of 2017.
• Senate Bill 630, sponsored by state Sen. Rick Jones, ensures that first offense minor in possession defendants who fail to appear in court or fail to comply with a judgment are treated the same as other civil infraction offenders. It is now PA 235 of 2017.
• Senate Bill 478, sponsored by state Sen. Dave Hildebrand, lowers the number of unpaid parking tickets a driver can accrue before having their driver’s license held for renewal from six to three. It is now PA 236 of 2017.
• Senate Bill 480, sponsored by state Sen. Mike Kowall, amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to name the portion of Highway I-96 beginning at mile marker 122 and extending west to mile marker 118 as the “Mitchel A. Kiefer Foundation for Distracted Driver Awareness Highway.” It is now PA 237 of 2017.
• Senate Bill 575, sponsored by state Sen. Tom Casperson, moves back the implementation dates for fee increases on motorcycle endorsements and motorcycle vehicle registration fees. It is now PA 238 of 2017.
