Michigan will be better prepared to assist farmers if substantial crop loss occurs under legislation signed Wednesday by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley.
House Bills 4562 and 4563, sponsored by state Reps. Curtis VanderWall and Daire Rendon, respectively, reinstates the Agriculture Disaster Loan Origination Program that was created in 2012 to ensure the state is prepared to assist farmers in the case of significant crop loss. The program sunset February 2018.
“Farming is one of Michigan’s top industries and we need to be prepared to help farmers out in the instance that weather or other factors cause significant crop loss,” Calley said.
Calley also signed HBs 4561 and 4564, sponsored by state Reps. Dan Lauwers and Tom Barrett, respectively, updating and expanding the list of agricultural equipment exemptions from sales and use tax.
The bills are now Public Acts 111-114 of 2018.
Article V Section 26 of the Michigan Constitution gives authority to the lieutenant governor to sign legislation when the governor is out of state.
