Oakland County Commissioner Shelley Goodman Taub has been appointed chair of the National Association of Counties (NACo) Arts & Culture Commission. The NACo Arts & Culture Commission works to foster an environment where arts can thrive to create more livable communities across the country. Its efforts help ensure that counties invest in art, aesthetics and cultural heritage, and that local leaders understand that the arts are an important avenue for encouraging economic development and solving problems in every community.
According to a recent study by the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis and the National Endowment for the Arts, the arts and culture industry generates $763.6 billion of economic activity in the U.S. and employs 4.9 million people.
“I am honored to have been appointed chair of the Arts & Culture Commission,” said Taub. “I have been a longtime supporter of literature, music, theatre, and dance, and in 1998, I provided funding to support the very first Arts, Beats and Eats festival. I look forward to sharing my experience and expertise in this new capacity to support the important work of this commission.”
The NACo Arts & Culture Commission supports workshop sessions, field trips, and special publications, and holds an annual Arts & Culture Awards event, to demonstrate how county officials can use art to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
Investment in the arts translates into improved local economies, enriched cultural and intellectual lives, and more aesthetically pleasing
communities. Further, it promotes lifelong learning, protects national heritage, supports historic preservation and helps children of all ages thrive and succeed. For additional information about the NACo Arts & Culture Commission, visit www.naco.org.
