Program looks at 'Representing the Client with Mental Illness'

The Oakland County Bar Association will present “Representing the Client with Mental Illness” on Friday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at Oakland Community Health Network, 5505 Corporate Drive in Troy.

Clients who have mental health or developmental disabilities, or a substance abuse disorder, often require legal help and intervention from outside the legal system. This training provides an in-depth look at these outside resources as well as legal strategies for representing someone with a mental health condition.

Topics of discussion will include:

• Services available for adults with mental illness, including Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), case management, psychiatric services and therapy services and suicide prevention resources.

• Resources available for people with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), including supports coordination, autism services, gentle teaching, therapy and respite services.

• An overview of additional supports like care coordination, residential options and guardianship.

• Legal remedies for these clients, such as Kevin's Law/assisted outpatient treatment (AOT), mental health treatment courts, pick-up orders/involuntary hospitalization, emergency mental health services and jail diversion

Cost for the seminar is $75 for OCBA members; $65 for OCBA new lawyers, paralegals, students; and $95 for non-members.  There will be an additional $10 charge for on site registration.

This seminar is free to attorneys on the criminal appointment list. Attorneys on the juvenile and criminal appointment lists will receive three CLE credits.
