First woman to serve on Road Commission for Oakland County

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners, under the leadership of newly-elected chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak), appointed Andrea LaLonde as the new road commissioner to the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) for a six-year term on January 9. This marks the first time a woman has ever served on the three-person board.

The RCOC maintains more than 2,700 miles of county roads, over 230 miles of state highways and approximately 1,500 county, city and state traffic signals across Oakland County. It is the largest county road system in Michigan with a 2019 budget of $155 million.

“Commissioner Andrea LaLonde brings a wealth of building and construction experience and a fresh perspective to the road commission,” said Woodward. “Her appointment brings essential geographic balance and long overdue diversity to the board. Together, we’re going to fix our roads and improve safety for all Oakland County residents and visitors.”

“I am honored to receive this appointment and eager to start the important work this commission undertakes,” said LaLonde. “I look forward to bringing a new perspective to the commission, utilizing the knowledge I have gained as a woman working with infrastructure issues and renewal, to help create a better Oakland County.”

LaLonde is currently employed by Operating Engineers 324 of Michigan and previously worked at Midwest Steel in Detroit. She is a graduate of Kalamazoo College and the daughter of Timothy LaLonde, a 22-year member of the St. Clair County Road Commission.
