The Oakland County Bar Association and the Consumer Bankruptcy Association will present “Collision Course: Protecting Against Bankruptcy’s Impact in Other Practice Areas” on Thursday, May 9, from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ferndale Elks Lodge, 22856 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale.
A panel of experts will provide a variety of tips, tools and techniques for well-seasoned bankruptcy practitioners as well as attorneys in other practice areas who may encounter bankruptcy issues in their cases. Speaking at the program will be Bankruptcy Court Chief Judge Phillip J. Shefferly, Eastern District of Michigan; Michelle H. Bass of Wolfson Bolton PLLC; Andrea D. Cartwright of Cartwright Law Firm PLLC; Dean R. Nelson Jr. of The Taunt Law Firm; and David W. Ruskin of the Office of the Chapter 13 Standing Trustee Detroit.
Topics of discussion will include:
• Bankruptcy as it pertains to various lawsuits in the personal injury, medical malpractice, employment, probate and family law arenas.
• Payment of attorneys in divorce cases: reimbursing the fees to ex-spouse v. directly to the attorney.
• How to structure settlement agreements to account for bankruptcy.
• State court judgments.
• How to structure judgments to set up res judicata/collateral estoppel in nondischargeability proceedings.
