The Oakland County Board of Commissioners was notified of the death of County Executive L. Brooks Patterson on Saturday. Patterson died at the age of 80 from stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Patterson publicly announced the news of his diagnosis during a press conference in March and indicated he would continue to perform his duties as county executive but that he would not seek an eighth term in office.
“The Board of Commissioners has lost a tremendous partner with the passing of County Executive L. Brooks Patterson,” said Board Chairman David T. Woodward. “His long and dedicated career in public service has resulted in an incredibly impactful legacy in Oakland County and our region. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family, friends and dedicated staff during this difficult time.”
“Brooks was a great visionary, leader and friend,” said Republican Caucus Chairperson Michael J. Gingell. “He consistently fought for the people of Oakland County and worked every day to make Oakland County a better place for each of us. While his legacy will remain, he will be sorely missed.”
Chief Deputy County Executive Gerald D. Poisson has assumed the role of acting county executive in accordance with the provisions of Michigan law. The Board may appoint a successor within 30 days from today’s date who would serve for the remainder of Patterson’s term. If the Board does not make an appointment, Poisson will continue to serve until a special election is held. No decisions have been made regarding an appointment at this time.
The Board respectfully requests that all individuals take this time to set aside their political differences and reflect on L. Brooks Patterson’s life and legacy of dedicated service to the people of Oakland County.
“This is an emotional time. Brooks has been a strong leader,” said Board Vice Chairwoman Marcia Gershenson. “Our thoughts are with the Patterson family.”
“Brooks Patterson had a special knack for hiring terrific people to implement his very creative, innovative ideas. He will be sorely missed,” said Republican Caucus Vice Chairperson Shelley Goodman Taub who is the only county commissioner still in office who was elected in 1992.
