DETROIT (AP) — A man who took his wife’s recognizable name before running for Wayne County judge has lost the race after a canvass turned up votes that hadn’t been counted.
Chandra Baker beat Nicholas Hathaway by 371 votes, finishing second in a race for two seats on the Circuit Court, according to the county Board of Canvassers.
Immediately after the Nov. 3 election, Hathaway was in second, ahead of Baker by 621 votes. But canvassers discovered that some absentee ballots in Detroit hadn’t been loaded into the county’s election system.
“This is an example when unofficial election night results are absolutely unofficial until the county canvas officials do our jobs,” said Jonathan Kinloch, a member of the canvassing board.
Hathaway and Baker each had received more than 250,000 votes.
Hathaway said he changed his last name from Bobak to honor his wife. He’s married to Judge Dana Hathaway.
By blood or by marriage, at least 10 members of the Hathaway family have served as Wayne County judges over the last two decades.
There was no immediate comment from Hathaway. He could request a recount.
