The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) will host a virtual luncheon meeting on Tuesday, January 19, from 1 to 2 p.m. via Zoom.
At the online program, Dr. Andrew M. Malec, partner & managing director at O'Keefe, and Anson E. Smuts, director & senior economist at O'Keefe, will present a webinar on the "Economics of Intellectual Property." Malec and Smuts will discuss how to monetize and protect the value of intellectual property, the derivation of royalty rates, intellectual property valuation considerations, and economic damage remedies.
Malec is the practice leader of the firm's Intellectual Property Group and is also the firm's chief economist. As a practicing economist, he specializes in utilizing his economics and statistical background to assist in providing economic advisory services to litigators on complex, commercial litigation matters. He has litigation support experience in economic damage quantification, expert witness testimony, and valuation opinions. Malec has provided expert opinions and/or testified in state and federal courts and in alternative dispute resolution proceedings on a variety of litigious matters including, but not limited to, automotive recalls, breach of contract, intellectual property infringement/trade secret misappropriation, intellectual property valuation, product liability, and statistical analysis.
Smuts utilizes his knowledge of accounting and finance principles, mergers and acquisitions, business valuation, intellectual property, and data analysis to identify strategies for business growth and development. Smuts has assisted clients with post-acquisition disputes involving earn outs and working capital adjustments, business valuations, financial budgeting and projections, damages in intellectual property matters, damages in fiduciary duty and employment matters, and fraud investigations.
