The Oakland County Treasurer’s Office encourages all property owners in Oakland County with delinquent 2019 property taxes from 2019 or prior taxes to pay outstanding balances in full before March 1, 2021, to avoid property tax forfeiture, an additional fee of $235 per parcel and increased interest assessments. As mandated by Michigan law, the property tax foreclosure process assesses an additional fee and increases interest rates along with the filing of a Certificate of Forfeiture with the Register of Deeds.
Oakland County property owners with unpaid delinquent taxes for 2019 or prior years are subject to Property Tax Forfeiture, the second stage in the three-year foreclosure process. Currently, 9,700 property owners are subject to the Property Tax Forfeiture process and were notified via certified mail on Feb. 1, 2021.
“We understand the extreme economic hardships being experienced throughout our community due to the pandemic and remain committed to working with our property owners to provide as much assistance as possible,” said Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner. “While Michigan Law requires us to implement the foreclosure process, we will continue working with our property owners to help them retain their properties and mitigate disrupting our communities, if at all possible.”
Earlier this month, Meisner also announced a continued moratorium on property foreclosures through 2021 in response to the ongoing pandemic and its devastating impact on our residents, families and property owners.
For assistance, Oakland County property owners are encouraged to contact the Oakland County Treasurer’s Office by phone at 248-858-0611 to privately discuss their situation and determine eligibility for a repayment schedule and other available resources.
