Oakland County WRC chief manager receives Great Lakes Water Authority honor

The chief manager of the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office, Tim Prince, has been honored this month with the Great Lakes Water Authority’s (GLWA) highest recognition, the 2021 Charlie Fleetham Collaboration Award. Prince is only the fourth recipient of the award, which is bestowed on an individual or team that has gone above and beyond to exemplify, embody and model the collaboration that is foundational to GLWA’s One Water philosophy.

The One Water Mission encourages GLWA members to collaboratively ensure a One Water system approach to the regional water and wastewater system that will be economically, socially, and environmentally responsible and sustainable.

GLWA CEO Sue McCormick presented the award to Prince at its One Water Partnership Meeting on March 4. McCormick led a round of applause for Prince from the meeting’s nearly 200 virtual participants, who included team members, board members, water and wastewater partners, associated stakeholders, elected officials, consultants and regulatory agencies.

"Over the course of many years of participating in GLWA's Member Outreach Program, several of which were spent as one of its co-chairs, Tim has demonstrated a unique ability to keep the ‘big picture’ in mind—keeping a regional mindset, environmental quality, and public health at the forefront of every decision,” McCormick said.
“He has served a particularly influential leadership role in two recent system-wide initiatives, including the recently revised wastewater charges methodology, which resulted in unprecedented simplicity and stability that Member Partners will enjoy for years to come, as well as being a key contributor to our Regional Collaboration Group, a subset of member partners who were indispensable in bringing our 40-year, regional Wastewater Master Plan over the finish line. I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart, for how much he has given to our One Water Partnership and to the whole of southeast Michigan."

Most recently, Prince worked with GLWA and the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, on behalf of the Evergreen-Farmington Sanitary Drain Drainage District, to orchestrate a set of projects that will prevent an estimated 48 million gallons of wet weather flow per year from making its way into the Rouge River untreated. Tim’s ability to keep colleagues focused on a regional approach to protecting public health and environmental quality was pivotal in generating, not only agreement, but also enthusiasm, for the path forward.

“Tim is a natural at advancing collaboration both within our department and among water authorities in Michigan,” said Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash. “On behalf of all WRC management team and staff, I want to congratulate Tim on earning this tremendous honor and we want to thank Tim for all the hours of hard work he has given in service to Oakland County and Southeast Michigan.”

“I am so appreciative of all my colleagues at WRC and of the great opportunities that GLWA offers for promoting collaboration in our profession,” Prince said. “Happy and humble are the best ways to describe my feelings upon receiving this honor, and I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the GLWA.”

GLWA provides nearly 40 percent of Michigan’s population with high-quality water, as well as effective and efficient wastewater services to nearly 30 percent of the state. It is all about the movement of water from the environment to its customers and back to the environment. GLWA ensures its member partner communities get the highest quality water using treatment standards that are stricter than state or federal regulatory requirements. The WRC is thankful for its continued partnership with GLWA.

The Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office is dedicated to protecting public health and safety, preserving natural resources and a healthy environment, maintaining reliable, high quality service, ensuring the value of investment and contributing to economic prosperity. It sets goals that encourage efforts to meet or exceed local, state and federal water quality standards, environmental regulations and safety requirements within its control.
