Oakland County's transparency highlighted in CARES Act dashboard

Oakland County has published a dashboard at www.oakgov.com/covid/grants/Pages/default.aspx that shows how communities shared in $256 million of federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and state of Michigan funding in support of pandemic response this past year. Using an interactive map highlighting all of the program funding, residents will be able to learn more about each program and view which grants helped stabilize and support small businesses, residents, schools, and non-profit organizations in their cities, villages, and townships.

“The pandemic has affected our residents, businesses, and communities on so many levels. That is why we were deliberate about making sure support reached communities in all corners of Oakland County,” County Executive Dave Coulter said.

Oakland County, with the support of the Board of Commissioners, awarded grants to more than 15,000 local businesses, which employ 65,000 people; 22 local chambers of commerce; 57 cities, villages, and townships; 278 non-profit and 31 veterans services organizations; 28 local school districts as well as retailers, restaurants, community centers, and more. The story map on the dashboard reveals the businesses, organizations, municipalities, and school districts in order to be transparent about how the county administered the state and federal dollars. The county also administered several programs that directly assisted individual residents. In those cases, the dollar amount spent by community is mapped to that community, not to individual residents.

“Working together, we moved more money to local families, veterans, communities, schools and our local small businesses and restaurants than any other county,” said Board Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak). “This dashboard is awesome, and it tells the story of how Oakland County stepped up and leaned in to get through this pandemic together.”

Oakland County has been among the most impacted counties in Michigan by confirmed coronavirus cases. Total confirmed COVID-19 cases have exceeded 94,000 in the county with at least 1,650 deaths and nearly 72,000 recoveries. The first cases were reported to the county on March 10, 2020.
