Secretary of State visits Troy office, offering better, faster customer service

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson visited the Troy office Wednesday — one of the largest and most historically crowded and slow in the state — and saw residents easily and quickly conducting their business. In November 2018, average wait times in Troy were 112 minutes before someone received assistance. Now the average time visitors spend in any Secretary of State office is 20 minutes total, including the time they conduct their transaction with staff.

“All our offices are open, pandemic operations are finished, and most importantly, we have made great strides fixing the problems that began plaguing the offices years before I before I became secretary of state,” said Benson. “Even at a historically busy office like Troy, residents are in and out of the office in an average of just 20 minutes, there are abundant office visits that can be booked online or by phone, and those who use our walk-up service are served immediately if there is availability or helped to schedule a return visit at a time convenient for them.”

Service improvements made by Benson, including replacing and increasing the number of self-service stations available across the state to more than 150, and making more services available online, have vastly reduced the number of transactions requiring an office visit. The result is that the residents who do visit offices find them calm, uncrowded, and operating efficiently.

“I want to thank Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for visiting the Troy branch today,” said state Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy). “Her support for the hardworking staff at our Troy branch offices is admirable. I truly appreciate her continued commitment to see firsthand what issues are affecting our community, which will in turn better serve the needs of us all.”

Office visits can be scheduled online at Michigan.gov/SOS or by calling 888-SOS-MICH.
