On January 1, Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown began her term as chair of the Michigan Association of County Clerks (MACC) District 5, elevating her to a key leadership post, including a spot on the statewide association’s Board of Directors.
“I’m grateful for the confidence placed in me by my fellow County Clerks,” said Brown. “MACC provides an important forum for County Clerks to receive training, share best practices, and discuss the issues affecting our offices and the services we deliver. I look forward to this expanded role in our association to help county clerks navigate these changing times.”
Leadership elections were held at the MACC Annual Conference in Benton Harbor in August. MACC’s District 5, an area which includes 18 counties stretching from southeast Michigan to the Thumb, is the statewide association’s most populated district.
Founded in 1977, MACC helps foster closer working relationships among County Clerks throughout Michigan by promoting better understanding of the duties of the office of the County Clerk through continuing education and legislative advocacy. Aside from the annual conference, MACC members have mini-conferences and district meetings quarterly.
Established in the state constitution, the office of County Clerk may vary in size and scope depending on the county, but all offices include core responsibilities such as maintaining court records, election administration, as well as issuing and maintaining vital records including birth records, marriage licenses, and concealed pistol licenses, among other things.
“The chance to work with colleagues from both parties on issues that affect our offices has really been a rewarding experience,” Brown said. “I have enjoyed participating in MACC trainings and events throughout my tenure as County Clerk and am excited about this new opportunity.”
