Royal Oak attorney and community activist Amanda Shelton announced her candidacy for the upcoming open seat on the Oakland County Circuit Court being vacated by Judge Rae Lee Chabot at the end of this year.
A resident of Beverly Hills, for 18 years, Shelton and her law partner Mary K. Deon currently run a boutique law practice in Royal Oak focused on family law, general business counseling, commercial transactions and litigation, non-profit management, real estate disputes, and employment matters. Shelton began her law career in 2004 in the commercial litigation department of Pepper Hamilton.
“I view judges as problem solvers. If elected, I intend to model four essential qualities of every good judge: to hear courteously; to consider soberly; to answer wisely; and to decide impartially,” said Shelton. “In modeling these qualities every day, I will draw on 18 years of professional experience as a tenacious litigator and pragmatic counselor. As a judge, I will examine practiced conventions that harm court users and create new processes to ensure justice is accessible for all people. I am committed to improving access to justice for historically marginalized communities.”
After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Wayne State University, Shelton assisted at-risk youth with obtaining employment skills as a youth programs coordinator through Michigan Works! in Oak Park. While attending Wayne State University Law School, Shelton founded the Gay & Lesbian Law Caucus to provide a safe and affirming space for law students who identified as LGBTQ+. She went on to serve as president of the Student Board of Governors at Wayne Law, becoming the first woman and first openly LGBTQ person in history to serve in that position. Shelton later went on to help found the Stonewall Bar Association and served on the Board of Directors at Ruth Ellis Center where she helped raise capital for the new drop-in and medical center that serves youth in and around Detroit who are experiencing homelessness and need trauma-informed care.
Shelton has been with her wife Kay for 23 years and has two children who attend Birmingham public schools. Shelton and Kay are active in their neighborhood, children’s school, and swim club. Shelton currently serves as vice-president of the Cranbrook Swim Club in Southfield.
Shelton has received the endorsement of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.
“Amanda’s broad legal experience, even temperament, and unfailingly reliable ethical compass make her extremely well qualified for the bench,” said Nessel. “Amanda’s steadfast commitment to civility in the legal profession and her dedication to justice, impartiality, and the rule of law will make her a great judge. She is simply the right person, at the right time to be on the Oakland County Circuit Court.”
