The Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan will present the Traffic Safety Training Program Webinar “OWI Cases and the HIPAA Myth” on Wednesday, June 1, beginning at noon via Zoom.
This webinar, presented by Michigan Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor Kenneth Stecker, will explain the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the legal principles behind it. The presentation will cover the provisions that apply to criminal law as well as the built-in exceptions for law enforcement and prosecutors conducting investigations into criminal matters. Lastly, the presentation will go over ways to work more closely with hospitals and how to keep lines of communication open on legal matters. Attendees will receive forms they can use to better navigate the legal roadblocks to obtaining protected health information.
