Among those in attendance at the swearing-in ceremony were (left to right) U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Jonathan Grey, U.S. District Court Judge Denise Page Hood, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Helene White, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Stephanie Dawkins Davis, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Sean Cox, and U.S. District Court Judge David Lawson.
In a special ceremony on Flag Day – June 14 – at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit, Stephanie Dawkins Davis was sworn in as the newest member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. Davis was administered the oath of office by her predecessor on the appellate court, Judge Helene White.
A former federal prosecutor, Davis is the first African-American woman from Michigan to serve on the 6th Circuit and is only the second Black woman ever to serve on the Cincinnati-based court, which handles federal appeals from Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee.
Davis has been a member of the U.S. District Court bench since 2019, serving at the courthouse in Flint after previously working as a magistrate judge. She began her legal career as a civil defense attorney at Dickinson Wright in Detroit before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where she spent nearly two decades as a federal prosecutor.
She is an alumna of Wichita State University and Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.
