'Nuts and Bolts of Appeals' explored in SADO webinar presented Aug. 25

The State Appellate Defender Office will present a webinar on "Nuts and Bolts of.... Appeals and District to Circuit Court Appeals" Thursday, August 25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. via Zoom.

In Part 1-Appeals, 9 a.m. to noon, attendees will learn how to spot issues, write and format an appeal by leave and by right, and develop postconviction motions. In Part 2-District to Circuit Court Appeals, 1 to 3:30 p.m., attendees will learn the procedure and timing of district to circuit court appeals, how they differ from COA appeals, and the differences in various jurisdictions, with a focus on Oakland and Macomb counties.

The webinar will be presented by Melissa Krauskopf, a 2004 Western Michigan University Cooley Law School graduate who has been practicing criminal defense since 2005, and has been a MAACS roster attorney doing appeals since 2013. She, along with her law firm partner, founded K and Q Law in 2008. In 2018, Krauskopf was awarded with the Barbara R. Levine Award for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy and received recognition for restoring appellate rights for individuals who had been left behind due to a breakdown in the system. She is a frequent trainer for the Oakland County Bar Association on topics such as the appellate process, sentencing guidelines, and PSIRs.
