Attorneys to examine recent employment law cases

Plunkett Cooney will present "Opinions Matter: Making Sense of Recent Employment Law Cases" as a GoToWebinar on Thursday, September 8, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

At one time or another, people have been told to keep their opinions to Themselves. In this instance, opinions really do matter. That's because a virtual deluge of court opinions has been published by Michigan's state and federal courts since the start of the 2022. Many of the rulings directly impact employers.

Plunkett Cooney is taking time out to host this webinar for Michigan employers who may now face a number of new legal challenges. Issues the courts have addressed so far this year include:

  • Arbitration Agreements
  • Handling Claims In Front of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
  • False Claims Act
  • Adverse Employment Actions
  • Discrimination Laws
  • Non-Competition Agreements
  • Protected Activities and Retaliation
  • Whistleblower Protection
  • Labor Organizing

Speaking at the webinar will be John S. Gilliam of Plunkett Cooney's Bloomfield Hills office. Gilliam is a member of the firm's Labor and Employment Law Practice Group who focuses his practice primarily in the area of employment law, including litigation involving alleged discrimination, retaliation and civil rights claims brought under state and federal statutes.

Gilliam represents and advises municipalities, private sector employers and their insurance providers on various employment-related issues. He assists clients with drafting and enforcing employment policies and contractual agreements, including covenants not to compete and severance agreements. His practice also includes the representation of clients before the American Arbitration Association, the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

In addition, Gilliam represents clients in the defense of litigation involving commercial disputes, property and casualty insurance, and personal injury defense, including first- and third-party automobile negligence, premises liability and animal liability claims.

Also speaking at the webinar will be Laura M. Dinon of Plunkett Cooney's Petoskey office.
