The Wolverine Bar Foundation (WBF) and Wolverine Bar Association (WBA) recently announced the honorees for this year’s 61st Annual Barristers’ Ball. Community, civic, and business leaders from across the state will come together at the black-tie charity fundraising gala on Saturday, April 29, to raise money for scholarships and educational programs designed to improve diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and ensure equal justice and access under the law for all.
The WBF’s annual awards program honors exceptional professionals across the state. The honorees who will be celebrated at the 61st Annual Barristers’ Ball include:
• Community Impact Award — Bishop Edgar Vann II, senior pastor of the Second Ebenezer Church
• Civic Service Award — Virgie Rollins, chair of the Democratic National Committee Black Caucus
• Legacy Award — Dr. Carl S. Taylor, professor emeritus, Michigan State University
• Legacy Award and Golden Gavel Award — U.S. District Court Judge Victoria A. Roberts, Eastern District of Michigan, and the first Black woman president of the State Bar of Michigan
• Golden Gavel Award — Third Circuit Court Judge John A. Murphy, Michigan’s longest-serving state-elected Black judge
• Golden Gavel Award — Wayne County 36th District Court Judge Deborah G. Ford
“The Annual Barristers’ Ball is our biggest fundraiser in support of the important outreach, scholarship, and educational programs led by the volunteers for the Wolverine Bar Foundation each year,” said Allen W. Venable, WBF and WBA president. “In addition to being a memorable evening of entertainment, camaraderie, and a chance to honor the best our profession has to offer — it is an important way to help support the next generation of civic leaders and legal professionals.”
Each year, more than 2,500 local leaders come together to celebrate the Annual Barristers’ Ball, which will take place at the Detroit Marriott Hotel at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit. For one night, this year’s event will celebrate and restore “Paradise Valley,” that fabled entertainment and business district of old Detroit.
The night’s entertainment is headlined by DJ Kid Capri, a Grammy Award winning music producer and HBO Def Comedy Jam’s original DJ. DJ Kid Capri is a world-renowned curator of Hip Hop and host of epic celebrations from coast to coast. The night will also feature Soul and R&B band Saxappeal + the CRU, Urban Hip Hop music from The Crank Radio Show’s DJ Rico Anderson, and the Old School Hip Hop & R&B sounds of Shade 45 Radio’s DJ Radd1.
