On Friday, July 28, Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey (center) was sworn in as the newest judge for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Michigan. The investiture took place in U.S. District Court Judge Bernard Friedman’s courtroom at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. During the ceremony, U.S. District Court Judge W. Louis Sands (right), Middle District of Georgia, administered the oath to Grey while Grey’s wife, Dr. ThedaMarie D. Gibbs Grey (left), held the Bible. Grey has served as a U.S. magistrate judge for the Eastern District of Michigan since 2021. He previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio from 2016 to 2021 and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan from 2012 to 2016. From 2011 to 2012 and 2007 to 2009, he was an associate at Seyfarth Shaw LLP in Chicago. Grey served as a law clerk for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Damon J. Keith, Sixth Circuit, from 2010 to 2011 and U.S. District Court Judge W. Louis Sands, Middle District of Georgia, from 2009 to 2010. Grey received his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2007 and B.S. from Morehouse College in 2004.
