OCBA UPDATE: Good times with the OCBA

This month’s column is all about the fun events hosted by the OCBA! The OCBA strives to offer our members not only educational and professional opportunities but also the chance to network and socialize with colleagues and friends in a more relaxed setting. To learn more about, or register for, any of the events listed below, please visit the OCBA’s website, ocba.org.

• Holiday Gala

It’s hard to believe that 2023 is already coming to an end, which means the Holiday Gala is right around the corner! The OCBA Holiday Gala is one of our most popular and anticipated events of the year. It’s an opportunity to gather with your colleagues and friends at the beautifully decorated Townsend Hotel to enjoy wonderful conversation, food, and merriment. At last year’s gala, there was a DJ playing festive music; a photo booth to capture all the fun memories; a pianist in the lobby greeting guests; and delicious and plentiful hors d’oeuvres and desserts. This year’s event promises to be even better, so don’t forget to register for the 2023 Holiday Gala!

• Race Judicata

Race Judicata is one of the OCBA’s most popular family-friendly events. Every fall, the OCBA hosts this well-attended 5K run and walk through the wonderful neighborhoods of Bloomfield Village. Family, friends, leashed dogs, and strollers are all welcome. All registrants receive a customized medallion, and winners receive a plaque. Don’t miss your chance to participate in this fun race!

• Bar for the Course Golf Tournament

If you love to golf, or just want to enjoy a beautiful 5-mile walk punctuated with disappointments, the OCBA’s Bar for the Course Golf Tournament is for you! Every summer, seasoned and newer golfers come together at the golf outing to enjoy a round of golf and a day of fun with their friends and colleagues. You can register as a solo, with a friend, or as part of a full foursome to compete in our course challenges and tournament. The registration fee includes golf fees, carts, beverages, lunch, dinner, and raffle prizes.

• Taste of Diversity

Gather with colleagues from local affinity bar associations at the biennial Taste of Diversity. This strolling reception celebrates our diverse and multicultural profession in a festive atmosphere with great food and friends. The evening features delectable hors d’oeuvres as well as the presentation of the Leon Hubbard Community Service Award and the Michael K. Lee Memorial Award. The Taste of Diversity is sponsored by the Oakland County Bar Association’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. The event was established in 2015 to celebrate diversity and to work together with area affinity bar associations to promote awareness of the need for increased diversity in the legal profession.

• Oakland County Bar Foundation Signature Event

Every spring, the Oakland County Bar Foundation hosts the Signature Event, its highly anticipated annual fundraising event. Don’t miss out on the chance to enjoy wonderful food, drinks, and company and help the OCBF raise money to support its mission. Within the last 10 years alone, the Signature Event has raised over $2.5 million to fund legal aid and education throughout Oakland County.

• Bar Night Out

The OCBA hosts Bar Nights Out, sometimes in collaboration with other affinity bar associations, that provide our membership with an opportunity to mix and mingle with other members of the bar in a fun and festive atmosphere. These events are held at various bars and restaurants and make for a fun evening out after a long day at work! Best of all, they are free for OCBA members to attend.

• OCBA Committees Social Events

Some of the OCBA’s committees also get in on the fun by hosting holiday, networking, and social events during the year. The Probate, Estate and Trust Committee holds an annual Wills & Gills event in appreciation of the Oakland County Probate Court staff and judges for the hard work they do for the attorneys and community throughout the year. This aptly named event is held at the Red Lobster near the Oakland County Circuit Courthouse.
The New Lawyers Committee hosts regular social events as well as fundraising and volunteer events. Since 2001, the New Lawyers Committee has donated more than $88,000 to local charitable organizations.

Each November, the Family Court Committee hosts its annual holiday party. This event is highly anticipated and well attended by OCBA members, judges, and court staff. This holiday party provides our members the opportunity to enjoy camaraderie outside of the courtroom in a festive atmosphere.

Your membership in the OCBA provides you with numerous opportunities to not only enhance your practice but also enjoy a fun event or evening out and make great friends and memories.
