Department to begin pilot program to provide navigators to assist families who have child support cases

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) wants to make it easier for families to navigate the child support system. To accomplish that, the department is starting a pilot child support navigator program.

The MDHHS Office of Child Support pilot program will be available to families in Genesee and Kent counties thanks to a partnership with the prosecuting attorneys and friends of the court in those two counties.

“We understand that navigating the child support system can be intimidating,” said MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel. “The navigator program is intended to assist families so that children can get the financial support they need and deserve. We will assist both payers and recipients of support and others served by the child support system.”

The Office of Child Support has received feedback from its Community Advisory Council and others that the child support program can be complicated and difficult to navigate for its participants.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will issue one or more grants in both Genesee and Kent counties to agencies that will provide navigation services to families served by the child support program. Grantees are expected to begin providing services in mid-2024.

The navigator pilot is supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and federal funding under Title IV-D of the Social Security Act.

Michigan’s Office of Child Support will host a conference call on Friday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m. to answer questions from grant seekers. Grant seekers are not required to attend the conference call, however, it will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about the expectations and application process. They can contact Julie Vandenboom at vandenboomj@michigan.gov for the link to the conference call. Letters of intent are due Jan. 4, 2024. Contact Kim Kerns at kernsk@michigan.gov for more information and the template for the letters of intent.
