Oakland County Water Resources commissioner’s office promotes careers help from Secretary of State offices

Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash announces a special collaboration with the Michigan Secretary of State to promote career opportunities in the water industry. To bring awareness to the labor shortages that his organization faces, the “Explore the World that Makes Water Work” informational campaign was developed. It is a first-ever and one-of-a-kind collaboration with the Michigan Secretary of State’s office and the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s office. No other water utility in the state has worked with the Michigan Secretary of State’s office in this capacity. Understanding the connection between the Secretary of State’s office’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) services and the need to recruit drivers with these special licenses was one of the driving forces for this collaboration.

“Looking to reach as many potential employees as possible outside of the traditional recruiting models with the hope of highlighting the most invisible and undervalued careers that have the most immediate impact on every aspect of our lives is the goal of this effort,” said Jim Nash. “We want people to consider a water career in the new year.”

Since November, the “Explore the World that Makes Water Works” recruitment promotional recording has been running at the following ten Secretary of State Oakland County branches: Clarkston, Hazel Park, Highland, Oak Park, Novi, Pontiac, Rochester Hills, Southfield, and West Bloomfield.

This first-of-its-kind collaboration would not be possible without the support of the Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and her team seeing value in and taking a chance on the idea.

“I’m committed to meeting Michiganders where they are and making government work for them,” said Benson. “This opportunity to partner with the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office will connect current and prospective CDL drivers with career opportunities in the water industry. Anyone interested in more information on the process to obtain a CDL can learn more at Michigan.gov/SOS. Thank you, Commissioner Nash, for your leadership on this innovative collaboration.”
