Oakland County officials applaud Novi transit expansion

During its meeting on Monday, March 18, the Novi City Council approved a resolution to request expanded and improved community public transportation from People’s Express (PEX).

This action marks the next step for transit after Novi’s voters approved the Oakland County Public Transportation millage in November of 2022, with the highest level of support (58.9 percent) of all communities whose local elected officials had previously opted out of countywide services. Novi is the last Oakland County community to approve a local transit plan and now joins the seven adjacent communities of Wixom, South Lyon, Lyon Township, Milford Township, Commerce Township, and the Villages of Milford and Wolverine Lake who successfully implemented similar PEX transit services last fall.

County officials and stakeholders offered the following remarks on the decision:

“Congratulations to Novi, one of Oakland County’s job-rich communities, for voting to collaborate with People’s Express, expand transit service and provide more options to get to shopping, appointments, jobs and school,” said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter. “This is great news for the residents of Novi who can now access both SMART bus service and door-to-door rides.”

“Novi voters approved the transit millage almost 18 months ago,” Commissioner Ajay Raman (D-Novi) said. “It is gratifying to know that our countless hours of thoughtful planning have finally resulted in a solution that will best serve Novi residents and offer better connections to all of Oakland County.”

“For the first time ever, all Novi residents will soon have access to local connector transit, brought to us by the Oakland County Public Transportation millage,” Commissioner Gwen Markham (D-Novi), said. “Everyone who needs an alternative to driving will have new options, beginning this summer.”

“Commissioners Raman and Markham made expanding transit in Novi a priority,” Oakland County Board of Commissioners Chair David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak) said. “They have proven that local advocacy pays off and brings solutions that serve the entire county.”

“As a representative of People's Express, I am thrilled to collaborate with the City of Novi in our shared commitment to enhancing community well-being through accessible and reliable transportation services,” Eveliina Taylor, PEX deputy director, said. “This partnership reflects the dedication to fostering community connections and improving the overall quality of life for residents. PEX will be working hand in hand with Novi to meet the evolving needs of the community, ensuring seamless and convenient transportation options for all.”

PEX offers door-to-door small bus/van transportation that riders can schedule three days in advance. Service is available weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with weekend service from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Those with disabilities who need additional assistance will receive door-to-door service. Regional connections and transfers are available with SMART and other local carriers for out-of-boundary trip making.
