Thomas launches campaign for Michigan Supreme Court seat

Trial and appellate lawyer and University of Michigan law professor, Kimberly Ann Thomas announced her campaign for the Michigan Supreme Court. The seat is currently held by Justice David Viviano, who announced he will not be seeking re-election to the bench.

“I am running as an experienced and impartial voice for access to justice, the rule of law, and respect before the court,” Thomas said. “As the granddaughter of coal miners, and a first-generation college graduate, I know the challenges that people in this state face every day. As an attorney, I have witnessed the impact the law has on the lives of everyday Michiganders and will be a Supreme Court justice who applies the law equally to all people.”

Thomas is a clinical professor and director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic at the University of Michigan Law School, where she educates the next generation of lawyers and serves low-income Michiganders. Thomas worked to improve our court system through her service on the Michigan Task Force on Juvenile Justice Reform. Thomas has been recognized with the U.S. Fulbright award and has been a legal education expert for the Rule of Law Initiative of the American Bar Association. She’s a graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Maryland at College Park. After law school, she clerked for U.S. Court of Appeals  Judge R. Guy Cole, Sixth Circuit, and began her career as a public defense attorney.  Thomas is a mother  of two Ann Arbor Public School students and is engaged in her community as a volunteer school Science Olympiad coach.

“Having spent a decade on the Michigan State Supreme Court and served as chief justice, and having known Kimberly for 20 years, I know that she would be a fair, impartial, and thoughtful member of the Court,” said former Chief Justice Bridget McCormack. “Thomas can master complex and novel legal issues, but also treats each case with care and respect.”

Elizabeth L. Gleicher, former chief judge of the Michigan Court of Appeals, said, “I am proud to support Kimberly Thomas for the Michigan State Supreme Court. As a member of the Court, she will strive for justice, fairness, and the rule of law on the bench.”

Thomas has earned the support of the Michigan Association for Justice. Thomas’ campaign can be found online at electkimberlythomas.com and on social media at @KTforJustice.
