Trailblazers Awards presented

The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association hosted its 30th Annual Trailblazers Dinner on Thursday, June 13, at the Westin Southfield Hotel. In recognition of the continued struggle towards justice and equality in the legal system, the theme for the year was “Disruptors in the legal community: Fighting to redress injustice and inequality.” Welcoming guests to the event were (left to right) Carlton Watson, Ponce Clay, Kalaethia Burton, Chastity Youngblood, Lanita Carter, Straker President Tanisha M. Davis, Kymberly Kinchen Reeves, Straker President-Elect Mikai Green, Damien Cash, Adrienne G. Scruggs, and Vassal Johnson II. The Trailblazers Awards Ceremony and Scholarship Dinner is the marquee event of the association and is used to honor outstanding individuals who have blazed the trail in the legal community and beyond.  This year’s honorees included Aaron Burrell of Dickinson Wright PLLC; U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison, Eastern District of Michigan; Gregory Reed of Reed Associates Consultants LLC; and Wayne County 36th District Court Judge Tenisha Yancey.

The awards ceremony is also the gateway to award the A. Kay Stanfield Spinks Law Student Scholarship to law students dedicated to public service in Michigan and the Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition scholarship to high school juniors and seniors. This year’s scholarship winners included (left to right) Morgan Shauntee, Kennedy Eason, and Demetrius Watson Jr.
