‘Placements in Juvenile Delinquencies’ discussed online by judge and attorney

The Youth Defense Project at the State Appellate Defender Office and Michigan Appellate Assigned Counsel System continues its series of youth defense trainings with a presentation on out-of-home placements in juvenile delinquencies. “Placements in Juvenile Delinquencies” will be presented online Thursday, July 18, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom.

A court’s decision to place a child in detention, residential, or even jail can have substantial consequences for the child, both in the short- and long-term. Attorneys need to understand what goes into those decisions, what the legal bases are for placement, and how to advocate for their young clients. The program speakers will discuss out-of-home placement in delinquencies.  Speaking at the program will be Eaton County Probate Court Judge Amanda Pollard and Elizabeth McCree.

At the Eaton County Probate, Pollard hears the full probate caseload and circuit court family law cases including all juvenile and child protective proceedings. She currently oversees the Eaton County Juvenile Division. Prior to her appointment to the bench, Pollard worked in private practice with a focus on family law and probate. She then served as an Eaton County assistant prosecuting attorney assigned to the juvenile docket and adult criminal cases with child victims. Most recently, Pollard served as the attorney referee and division director for the Eaton County Juvenile Division.

McCree has practiced law in Georgia and Michigan for sixteen years and she has owned her solo law practice in her hometown of Benton Harbor since 2015. Her specialties include children's law, education law, criminal law, probate and estate planning. She also serves on several local, regional, and statewide boards and committees and has been an instructor at Andrews University since 2021.

This training is restricted to defense attorneys and members of defense teams.
