Board of Commissioners supports additional gun buyback and destruction events

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners has allocated an additional $10,000 to support continued gun buyback and transformation events in Oakland County, facilitated by St. David’s Episcopal Church of Southfield. The Board voted unanimously on two resolutions earlier in 2024 that appropriate $5,000 from the Safer Communities Fund and $5,000 from the Board of Commissioners General Fund Special Projects to support these programs, which turn unwanted firearms into works of art.

“It’s exciting for our community members to see their unwanted weapons transformed into beautiful pieces of art,” Board Vice Chair Marcia Gershenson (D-Bloomfield Twp.) said. “These buybacks are a way that residents themselves can take action to ensure everyone feels safe and secure in their daily lives.”
Upcoming gun buyback and transformation events in Oakland County will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

• August 3 – Nativity Episcopal Church, 21200 W. 14 Mile Road, Bloomfield Township
• September 28 – All Saints Episcopal Church, 171 W. Pike St., Pontiac
• October 5 – St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 5301 Hatchery Road, Waterford Township

High-performance chop saws will be running throughout the event to destroy weapons that are turned in and create art from the remnants. Attendees can choose to receive artwork, jewelry, or key fobs forged from the donated gun parts, or t-shirts or gift cards in exchange for their unwanted firearms. There is no limit to the number of weapons a participant may turn in.

"There are thousands of unwanted guns in Metro Detroit that are awaiting discovery by children, people undergoing mental distress, or thieves,” said Father Chris Yaw, rector at St. David’s Episcopal Church. “This program allows us to safely and completely take these weapons out of circulation. Accompanied by University of Michigan researchers, who are doing groundbreaking work in gun safety, this program is doing invaluable service to our county, state, and nation."

These events are a community-led expansion of the Board of Commissioners Oakland County Gun Buyback Pilot Program, which was held in late 2022. The recent allocation of funds to these programs demonstrates the Board’s continued commitment to reducing gun violence in the community by providing a safe and legal way for residents to dispose of firearms they no longer wish to keep.
