ABA Task Force releases analysis, checklist for how lawyers can protect democracy

By American Bar Association

The American Bar Association’s Task Force for American Democracy released an analysis last Friday outlining the critical role lawyers must play in restoring trust in U.S. democracy by “upholding the rule of law, ensuring that laws are applied equally to all citizens and that government actions are subject to judicial review, leading to accountability, transparency and predictability in governance.”

The task force, created in August 2023 by ABA President Mary Smith, has spent the past year doing extensive research, community engagement via listening tours, consultations and producing reports on the subject. The analysis also includes a letter from Smith outlining the importance of lawyers in this process. The analysis lists working papers from the task force as well as lists of what individual lawyers and state and local bars can do.
