Webcast exlores ‘Ethically Terminating Attorney-Client Relationships’ August 22

American Law Institute Continuing Legal Education will present the webcast “Parting Ways: Ethically Terminating Attorney-Client Relationships” on Thursday, August 22, from noon to 1 p.m.

Sometimes the attorney-client relationship just doesn't work out. Whether a client is lying about critical information, hasn’t paid in nine months, or reached an impasse on how the matter is to be handled, every lawyer needs to know when and how to walk away. But ending any relationship, including that between an attorney and client, is never easy. This webcast will guide practitioners through the maze of ethical and practical issues surrounding the termination of representation prior to the natural conclusion of the legal work.

This one-hour webcast will explore the steps to take to withdraw from a client matter, including:

• What the difference is between “must" versus "may" withdrawal scenarios under MRPC Rule 1.16

• When to seek permissive withdrawals from courts/tribunals and the issues that may arise

• Why end-of-engagement letters and other forms of notice to clients are essential

• How to handle pending deadlines

• What confidentiality obligations continue to apply

• How to handle client files and funds after withdrawal

All registrants will receive a set of downloadable course materials to accompany the program.

Cost for the webcast is $199.  All registrants will receive downloadable course materials to accompany the program.  To register, visit www.ali-cle.org.
