Alice Abreu, the Honorable Nelson A. Diaz Professor of Law at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, has been named chair of the nearly 12,000-member American Bar Association Section of Taxation. She took office at the ABA Annual Meeting earlier this month in Chicago.
Abreu, who also founded and directs Temple’s Center for Tax Law and Social Policy, has taught at the university for nearly 40 years, specializing in federal income tax law with an emphasis on the formulation of tax policy. She is a recipient of the 2017 Great Teacher Award from Temple, the 2013 Murray F.
Shusterman Award for excellence in teaching from the Temple Law Alumni Association and the 2007 University Lindback award for distinguished teaching.
She has been a visiting professor at a number of institutions, including Harvard Law School and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Abreu served as secretary and vice chair of publications for the Tax Section. She is a sought-after speaker at national and regional tax conferences.
“My involvement with the ABA has been professionally transformative,” Abreu said. “It has taught me about areas of the law I didn’t even know existed when I was practicing law, and what it has taught me has benefited hundreds of my students. I look forward to amplifying that experience for our members during my year as chair.”
Abreu serves as a regent of the American College of Tax Counsel, a trustee of the American Tax Policy Institute and is a member of the American Law Institute. She also previously served on the board of the Center for Taxpayer Rights.
Before joining Temple Law School, she clerked for Judge Edward N. Cahn in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and practiced tax law with Dechert LLP in Philadelphia.
Abreu received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a law degree from Cornell Law School.
