By American Bar Association

Artificial intelligence and recent critical business decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court are among more than 150 different sessions during the three-day hybrid fall meeting of the American Bar Association Business Law Section in San Diego later this month.

The “Business Law Fall Meeting 2024,” sponsored by the ABA Business Law Section, will be conducted Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 12-14, online and in-person at Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina

The Business Law Fall Meeting is the ultimate gathering of business law professionals from around the world, with more than 50 continuing legal education programs and scores of other discussions and events involving an array of public officials and business law practitioners. Altogether, more than 4,500 attendees are expected from 25 or more countries and more than 300 speakers.

Two showcase programs, both available virtually, are:

• “AI and Attorney-Client Privilege: A Brave New World for Lawyers” — Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing the legal landscape, raising critical ethical considerations. AI tools can write, converse and mimic legal reasoning. The panel will explore how lawyers can stay ahead in the evolving landscape and provide guideposts on what to know about AI's current capabilities in the legal field and its ethical implications. Speakers are Michael Simon, counsel, XPAN Law Partners, Holliston, Massachusetts (moderator); Reena Bajowala, shareholder, Greenberg Traurig LLP, Chicago; Andrew Pery, chief ethics evangelist, ABBYY, Ottawa, Canada; and A.J. Singleton, general counsel and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC, Lexington, Kentucky.—Thursday, noon-1:30 p.m. PDT

• “Supreme Court Business Review: Significant Business Cases from the Last Two Supreme Court Terms” — The U.S. Supreme Court is not a specialized business court, but its decisions have important ramifications for businesses. This program examines some of the most significant business-related decisions the court has rendered during the past two years, including in cases related to arbitration, bankruptcy, securities, state legislative and judicial jurisdiction, intellectual property and employment law. Speakers are Stuart Riback, partner, Wilk Auslander LLP, New York (moderator); Michael Mongan, solicitor general, California Department of Justice, San Francisco; Kannon Shanmugam, partner, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, Washington, D.C.; and Alvin Thompson, judge, U.S. District Court, Hartford, Connecticut.—Friday, noon-1:30 p.m. PDT
