Law students sworn in as student attorneys for clinical education program

Thirty-nine Wayne State University Law School students took the oath to practice as student attorneys on Aug. 29 marking the beginning of their clinical education journey. Under the supervision of clinical faculty, these students will serve clients in the Detroit area community as part of Wayne State Law School’s Clinical Education Program.

The ceremony featured remarks from Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Elizabeth Gleicher who inspired students with her insights on the vital role of legal advocacy in promoting justice and community well-being. Gleicher, who served on the Court of Appeals for 17 years and was chief judge from 2022 to 2024, emphasized the responsibility student attorneys have in representing marginalized communities. She also highlighted her transition to serving as a senior consulting attorney for Planned Parenthood of America, where she continues to advocate for important social issues.

Keynote speaker Molly Moening, a Wayne Law alumna who graduated in December 2023, shared her experiences and encouraged students to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
Currently serving as a policing practices fellow, Moening is actively involved in developing collaborations to address policing issues in Detroit and has a rich background in environmental advocacy.

This fall, the students will participate in one of four clinics, including:

• Appeal and Post-Conviction Advocacy Clinic

• Business and Community Law Clinic

• Immigration Appellate Advocacy Clinic

• Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic

Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Wayne Law Partrich Lobby, allowing students and faculty to celebrate this milestone together. Through the Clinical Education Program, students will work on real cases for clients who may otherwise lack legal assistance, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the process.
