Law firm launches diversity fellowship for 1L law students

Varnum LLP is pleased to announce the launch of 1Elevate, an innovative fellowship program designed specifically for first-year law students (1Ls) that offers a pathway to full-time, post-graduation employment with the firm. The fellowship is focused on recruiting law students from historically underrepresented backgrounds or allies of such groups that share Varnum’s commitment to diversity
and inclusion. 1Elevate augments Varnum’s longstanding recruiting efforts for second-year law students.

“1Elevate is a direct reflection of Varnum’s commitment to fostering an inclusive legal profession,” said Yvonne George, chair of Varnum’s Summer Associate Program. “We believe that by engaging students early in their law school careers, we can provide not only a professional foundation, but also the mentorship and resources that are critical for long-term success for students of all backgrounds.”

The 1Elevate fellowship offers participants a paid summer associate position during their 1L summer, with the potential to receive a full-time post-graduation job offer at the end of the fellowship. Additionally, fellows will be invited to return as 2L summer associates and may gain in-house legal experience with one of Varnum’s clients. Fellows will also benefit from extended mentorship throughout their second year of law school, including networking and professional coaching opportunities.

“1Elevate is an important new tool in our effort to recruit and develop future legal talent,” said Lindsae Badgerow, director of Legal Recruiting and Professional Development at Varnum. “We’re taking a holistic approach, seeking candidates with strong academic credentials and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in the legal field, along with the intent to practice law in Michigan after graduation.”
