Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

The last few years I have been interested in both state and federal law. The Highland Township Public Library as well as The Milford Post Office freely provides The Oakland County Legal News, where I have found interesting articles and cartoons with a touch of humor.

Sometime ago I was a student at one of our finest community colleges in Oakland County. I studied all of the art history and appreciation classes available.

One of the classes provided interesting information about an important case of law, the Whistler-Ruskin episode. It resulted from Ruskin’s famous reference to Whistler “flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face” in July 2, 1877, concerning one of Whistler’s greatest paintings, a copy of which was published in the Barbara Novak book, “American Painting of the Nineteenth Century.” Whistler reportedly spent a fortune, took Ruskin to court, and won. He won $1 for principle and reputation.
