Henry Ford Health gets $20 million to boost cancer care, research

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit businessman and philanthropist Mort Harris has given Henry Ford Health System $20 million to facilitate cancer care and research.

Officials announced Monday the gift in honor of Harris' late wife Brigitte Harris marks the largest individual gift to the Detroit-based health system. The gift is part of a $40 million package from Harris supporting Henry Ford's new Detroit cancer building project.

The building will be named the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion, part of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute. In addition to supporting the project, the money will support three specific program areas: pancreatic cancer, brain cancer and precision medicine.

Brigitte Harris had pancreatic cancer and received care at Henry Ford Hospital. A spring groundbreaking is planned for the pavilion and it's expected to open in 2019.
