Rail company charged in north Mich. forest fires

GRAYLING, Mich. (AP) — State officials have filed charges against a railroad company accused of operating an unsafe train that ignited fires in northern Michigan two years ago, damaging 1,300 acres of forest.

Several homes and other buildings also were destroyed in the April 2008 fire near Grayling and another in Arenac County. Total losses were estimated at $1 million.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said last week that Saginaw-based Lake State Railway Inc. had been charged with two felony counts of setting fire to forest land.

The company also was charged with two misdemeanors of operating an engine without equipment designed to contain sparks from trains.

Cox said the courts could require fines and restitution.

Phone messages seeking comment were left last week with Lake State Railway.
