Ninety years of the 19th Amendment

All 24 members of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners signed a declaration commemorating the milestone of the 19th Amendment giving women the constitutional right to legally vote in the United States. Among those on hand to sign the declaration on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Board of Commissioners’ auditorium in Pontiac were Oakland County officials (left to right) Board Chairman Bill Bullard Jr., Oakland County Clerk Ruth A. Johnson, along with female Oakland County Commissioners Mattie McKinney Hatchett, Janet Jackson, Marcia Gershenson, Christine Long, Shelley Goodman Taub, and Sue Ann Douglas (not pictured is Commissioner Helaine Zack). This is the 90th Anniversary of the important legislation being signed into law on Aug. 26, 1920. This anniversary is officially recognized as Women’s Equality Day which is celebrated Aug. 26, 2010 across the nation.
