Michigan jobless rate rises to 10.5 percent in June

LANSING (AP) -- Michigan's unemployment rate rose again in June, this time to 10.5 percent, its highest rate since January. The seasonally adjusted figures released Wednesday by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget show an increase of 0.2 percentage points since May. The state figure remains above the national rate of 9.2 percent. Michigan saw its second-quarter average job total decline by 4,000 from the first quarter. Since June 2010, payroll jobs in Michigan increased by 53,000 or 1.4 percent. That includes 22,000 more professional and business services jobs, 17,000 more in manufacturing, 16,000 more in education and health services and 11,000 more in construction. June brought job decreases in the areas of manufacturing, information, and professional and business services. Leisure and hospitality services jobs rose by 8,000 last month.
