Man who wanted to ship pot to mom loses appeal

ANN ARBOR (AP) -- A Washtenaw County man convicted of possessing marijuana says he had a defense: The pot bound for Florida was for his sick mother. Solomon Abrams says he should have been convicted of a misdemeanor under Michigan law because he didn't charge his mom. But the Michigan appeals court last week disagreed and affirmed his felony crime of possessing marijuana with intent to deliver. The court says the judge had no obligation to consider the lesser charge. The court says the fact that no money changed hands is not a defense to the drug charge filed by Washtenaw County prosecutors. The 30-year-old Abrams got a one-year sentence, which was fulfilled in 2010. Published: Tue, Aug 2, 2011
