Annual Quake On The Lake most successful in its history

The 12th annual Quake On The Lake was the most successful weekend in its history with 35,000 patrons for the two-day event. It raised enough money to grant the wishes of this year's Rainbow Connection Wish Children - 8-year-old Kyle of White Lake Township whose wish is to visit Disney World and 13-year-old Sabrina of Troy whose wish is to travel to Vancouver, British Colombia this fall to view a taping of her favorite show "Supernatural." "Once again, Quake On The Lake has shown it not only is one of Oakland County's premier quality of life events, but continues to come through for the kids at The Rainbow Connection," said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. Ninety race teams from across North America competed (72 hydroplane teams and 18 vintage teams). Two Michigan drivers won National Championship titles: Mario Maraldo, in his 50th year of racing, won in the Grand Prix class and Cal Phipps won the Grand National Hydroplane class. In addition, Michigan resident and long-time Quake On The Lake sponsor and race boat owner, Royce Richards' race teams took first place and third place in the 2.5 Litre Modified class, driven by Andrew Tate, whose family has been involved in racing for four generations. A complete list of race results can be found on www.QuakeOnTheLake.org. Four world records were broken. Bert Henderson from Brockville, Ontario, broke the Grand Prix world speed record by over 2 mph with 102 mph in Saturday's qualifier. This is Quake's 18th official world record. Three other records were broken but do not count because they were not over the current record enough. "With record speeds and attendance, it's clear Quake On The Lake belongs in the winner's circle of boat racing," said Dale Hampshire, Quake On The Lake chairman. Event sponsors included: Fox 2 News, Budweiser, Royce Richards, Suburban Ford of Waterford, IBEW Local 58, Genisys Credit Union, NTA Graphics, Republic Services/Allied Waste of Michigan, Village Lakes and White Lake Marketplace, Alternative Automotive Technologies, Joe Lunghamer Chevrolet/Buick/GMC, Szott Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, Wonderland Marine West, LaFontaine Automotive Group, Snapple, Nestle Nesquik, Health Plus of Michigan, U.S. Navy, STI, Mesquite Creek Steaks and Seafood in Clarkston, Oakland County, White Lake Township, Waterford Township, Oakland County Parks and Recreation, The Oakland Press, and Hampton Inn of Auburn Hills.
