Man in terrorism trial wants limits on evidence

DETROIT (AP) -- A man going to trial on terrorism charges in Detroit is asking a judge to prevent the government from showing a model of the bomb carried aboard an international flight. An attorney for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab says it would only inflame the jury. Anthony Chambers also wants to stop prosecutors from showing a video that demonstrates the power of the explosive components in a field. In a court filing Tuesday, Chambers says a bomb on an aircraft and one demonstrated in a field are not similar. Jury selection starts Oct. 4. Abdulmutallab is charged with trying to destroy an Amsterdam-to-Detroit airliner on Christmas 2009. The 24-year-old Nigerian is also asking that the government not be allowed to show parts of an al-Qaida video at trial. Published: Fri, Sep 23, 2011
