'Business Courts in Michigan' topic of program

The State Bar of Michigan's Business Law Section's Commercial Litigation Committee and Small Business Forum will present "Business Courts in Michigan" on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Columbia Center in Troy. The moderator for the evening will be Douglas L. Toering of Toering Law Firm PLLC and speakers will include Macomb County Circuit Court Chief Judge Mark S. Switalski; Diane L. Akers of Bodman PLC, past chair, Business Law Section; Julia A. Dale, director, Corporation Division, Licensing and Regulatory Affairs; and Michael F. Gadola, Office of the Governor-Legal Division. After nearly 10 years, Michigan is poised to take a giant step toward adopting a Business Court. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder supports a Business Court; in fact, legislation may be introduced as early as this fall. Meanwhile, the Macomb County Circuit Court has proposed a "Special Business Docket" for business cases. If approved, Macomb County will have the first business docket in Michigan. Regardless of one's area of practice, attendees will want to hear more about what Licensing and Regulatory Affairs is doing right now to make doing business in Michigan quicker and easier. The registration fee for this event is $25 (including light supper). Judges are free. The deadline for registration is Thursday, Oct. 13. Cancellations must be received at least 72 hours in advance. Mail check payable to "State Bar of Michigan" in the amount of $25 and completed registration form to: State Bar of Michigan, Attn: Seminar Registration, Michael Franck Building, 306 Townsend Street, Lansing 48933.
