State and doctor accused of poor work make deal
WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP (AP) -- A Detroit-area doctor accused of misdiagnosing epilepsy in hundreds of children has agreed to pay a $10,000 penalty and have his future work reviewed by another doctor.
The Detroit Free Press says Dr. Yasser Awaad signed the agreement last week with state regulators in a deal that allows him to keep his license. He'll be on probation for at least one year.
There still is a lawsuit pending against Awaad, a resident of West Bloomfield Township, and Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn. He is accused of implanting devices into the brains of several youngsters to control epileptic seizures they never had.
The hospital continues to back Awaad, although it agreed in 2009 to pay $309,140 to Michigan's Medicaid program, which had paid for some of the doctor's treatments.
