Lawuit claims ICE agents assaulted mother, son

GRAND RAPIDS (AP) -- A Latina mother and her adult son have suit in Grand Rapids federal court, saying that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents accosted, handcuffed and assaulted them. The civil suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and Michigan Immigrant Rights Center says Telma and Luis Valdez were racially profiled. The complaint says the Valdezes were confronted in February 2011 outside a home in Grand Rapids. It says agents pointed a gun at Luis Valdez, demanded identification and forced them into an apartment where they were questioned about their U.S. citizenship. They later were released. ICE spokesman Khaalid Walls says the agency doesn't comment on pending litigation but that it "maintains a zero tolerance policy on abuse." Published: Fri, May 4, 2012
