Center honors judges and supporters at Fiesta

Bullying is a hot topic in today's society simply because it is a problem that has grown out of control. This social disease strikes at the very core of basic human behavior and a way to stop bullying must be found now. Oakland Mediation Center (OMC), a private 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is uniquely qualified with expertise in programs proven to prevent and reduce bullying and violence, keeping kids in school and out of the juvenile justice system. Through several events planned for 2012, OMC will raise funds needed to deliver these programs. To kick off the year of events, OMC will host a "Piñatas for Peace Fiesta" on Friday, May 4, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Troy Marriott. The night will begin with complimentary margaritas, passed hors d'oeuvres, a photo stop, and a silent auction during the cocktail hour; followed by a Southwestern influenced dinner; an awards ceremony; and end with dancing to festive and contemporary music provided by DJ Crashers. Recipients receiving awards at the Fiesta are: Toby Arons and Rackeline Hoff, 20 Year Service Awards; Oakland County Probate Court Judge Elizabeth Pezzetti, Community Hero Award; Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Wendy Potts, Leadership Award; Oakland Friend of the Court Director Suzanne Hollyer, Innovator Award; and Oakland County 46th District Court Administrator Donna Beaudet, Nanci S. Klein Memorial Award. "So often we hear about people who have been bullied and nothing about solutions. OMC's 'Piñatas for Peace Fiesta' provides the opportunity to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at a fun and festive event and support programs for our schools proven to stop bullying!" said OMC Executive Director Bonnie Hanes. Since 1989, OMC has served the community empowering over 91,000 youth to peacefully resolve conflict themselves through mediation and education programs. Due to cutbacks at the federal and state level schools no longer have funding to provide these vital programs. Funds raised at the Fiesta will subsidize the gap and provide students with life skills they would not otherwise possess. Ticket prices for OMC's 'Piñatas for Peace Fiesta' range from $75 to $125 and can be ordered at www.mediation-omc.org. Published: Mon, Apr 30, 2012
