Oakland County CIO to lead session at Harvard's 'Shared Services Summit'

Deputy County Executive/CIO Phil Bertolini will lead a breakout session on shared services among state and local governments at Harvard University's "2012 Public Sector and Education Shared Services Summit: Pathways to Transformation." The summit will be held June 20-22 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Bertolini's session will focus on cloud computing and governance and finance for cross-jurisdiction collaboration. Participants will discuss how to generate ideas for state and local officials to implement more cross-jurisdiction collaboration.

"In this day and age of shrinking government revenue, more local governments are looking to share services to reduce their costs," said Bertolini. "For instance, here in Oakland County we have implemented cloud computing to make our software available to governments throughout Michigan. It's a revenue enhancer for the county, and a budget saver for those communities that utilize our software."

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said cloud computing has become one of many successful regional initiatives his administration has generated.

"Because of our trailblazing leadership in cloud computing, the National Association of Counties asked to partner with us to create a national catalogue of applications available for use by other public entities around the country," said Patterson. "Cloud computing will create opportunities for state, county, and local governments to collaborate. This is the ultimate in shared services."

Bertolini will host his breakout session Thursday, June 21.

The "2012 Public Sector Shared Services Summit: Pathways to Transformation," is the fifth annual summit held at Harvard. The summit will provide an unprecedented opportunity to learn from and network with the world's foremost shared services practitioners, Harvard faculty and researchers and select industry executives.

The summit will feature informative case studies, peer-to-peer problem-solving sessions, and topical workshops designed to help you progress along a Harvard researcher created framework referred to as the Shared Services Horizons of Value.
