County to plant state's first 'Liberty Tree'

Oakland County will plant Michigan's first "Liberty Tree" in a patriotic ceremony in the south courtyard of the Oakland County Circuit Court building at noon Tuesday, Sept. 11, in recognition of the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and as part of Patriot Week activities. Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren, co-founder of Patriot Week, and Chief Deputy County Executive Gerald Poisson, on behalf of County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, will take part in the event. The ceremony will include the planting of an American Liberty Tulip Poplar and installation of a special bronze plaque with an inscription that recounts the history of the original Liberty Tree, which stood in silent witness to countless meetings, speeches and celebrations, and became the rallying place for the Sons of Liberty during the American Revolution. "America can only survive as a free republic if its people know, honor, and respect our founding First Principles and history." Warren said. "The planting of Michigan's first Liberty Tree and Patriot Week are instrumental in the renewing of America." When Patterson heard that Michigan's first Liberty Tree needed a host, he jumped at the opportunity. "Michigan's first Liberty Tree is a living, growing tribute to our country's freedom and founding," Patterson said. "What better place to plant it than right outside the courthouse where we live by the Constitution every day." In addition, Patterson has declared Sept. 11 - 17, 2012 as Patriot Week in Oakland County. To mark Patriot Week in Oakland County, Patterson has ordered a large American flag draped on the west wing of the courthouse. The program, which will be attended by local dignitaries, will include a brief speaking program, singing of the National Anthem, and the recitation of the poem "Liberty Tree" by Thomas Paine. Patriot Week renews America's spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history. Anchored by the key dates of Sept. 11 and Sept. 17 (Constitution Day), the schedule for each day has a separate focus. Co-created in 2009 by Warren and his then 10-year-old daughter Leah, Patriot Week has captured the imagination and support of citizens across the nation. The grassroots effort is renewing the spirit of America, one person at a time, and is spreading throughout the nation.
